Explanatory Notes

Mortality Reduction

20% (adjusted for whole population) while 27% (when just comparing the screening group versus the control)

The present analysis is based on the whole study population, including those men in the screening arm who decided not to be screened and those in the control arm who chose to be screened. An analysis adjusting for this aspect of the study is ongoing and will be reported during the year of 2009. The advantage in prostate cancer mortality through screening may be expected to be in the range of 25 to 30% on an individual basis. For the purposes of official reporting, the results exclude the age groups 50-54 and 70-74 years to remove reporting inconsistencies within the different centres.

Funding

The international coordination of ERSPC has been supported from its initiation by grants from Europe Against Cancer and the fifth and sixth framework program of the European Union; by many grants from agencies or health authorities in the individual participating countries; and by unconditional grants from Beckman-Coulter-Hybritech Inc. The studies in each national centre were funded by numerous local grants.
